Becoming Superhuman in 2011

Becoming Superhuman in 2011

Written by Matt Frazier in Product Reviews .Rapid Fat-Loss. Incredible Sex. Becoming Superhuman.

Of the three promises contained in the subtitle of Tim Ferriss' new book, The 4-Hour Body (Amazon affiliate link), it's that third one that really grabbed me.

Not that rapid fat loss and incredible sex don't sound appealing; it's just that they're the same promises hucksters have made for eons. Becoming superhuman, though—that's one place not many marketers are willing to go.

If this were anyone else, I'd never believe it. But this is the same Tim Ferriss who drastically slashed his body weight to weigh in for the Chinese Kickboxing Championships and qualify for an extremely low weight class, only to put it all back on right away and win the competition by exploiting a loophole that disqualifies fighters who are pushed out of the ring three times in a bout. This, on only a few weeks of actual kickboxing training.

Given Tim's track record of doing awesome stuff and the success of his first book, The Four Hour Workweek, I don't see how anyone with the slightest interest in fitness could resist learning what Tim has done in the realm of creating rapid change in the human body.

A veritable smorgasbord of body hacks

The 4-Hour Body isn't meant to be read cover-to-cover. After a few essential introductory chapters, Tim cuts you loose to pick and choose, a la carte, what to read. ("Thinner, faster, bigger, stronger…which 150 pages will you read?" is the first line in the publisher summary. The entire book is 578 pages long.)

Here are the chapters I plowed through during my initial, oh-my-god-I-cannot-put-this-down fervor:

•The Slow-Carb Diet I: How to Lose 20 Pounds in 30 Days Without Exercise

•Hacking the NFL Combine II: Running Faster

•Ultraendurance I & II: Going from 5K to 50K in 12 Weeks

•Becoming Uberman: Sleeping Less with Polyphasic Sleep

•Pre-Hab: Injury-Proofing the Body

•Effortless Superhuman: Breaking World Records with Barry Ross

•The Meatless Machine I: Reasons to Try a Plant-Based Diet for Two Weeks

•The Meatless Machine II: A 28-Day Experiment

The big point you need to understand is that Tim is an experimenter, an empiricist. He circumvents the red tape and politics of academia and goes straight to people who are getting massive, incredible results. Then he learns what they do, boils it down, and makes himself his primary subject for observation.

A few fascinating ideas

Here are just a few of the cool things in The 4-Hour Body I had never heard before that I can't wait to try:

•Tim advocates a binge day each week in which you eat whatever you want, so much that you almost make yourself sick and therefore have very few cravings for the rest of the week. He suggests certain measures to minimize fat gain on this day, such as starting the day with a high-protein, "good" meal, then employing caffeine, grapefruit, and brief muscle contractions to move the subsequent binge-food quickly through the body.

•In the ultramarathon-training section, Tim works with Brian MacKenzie from Crossfit Endurance. Brian trains most of his athletes for 100-mile races without ever having them run more than a half marathon! The idea is that you don't need much of an aerobic base to complete the distance; you simply need to strengthen your body and train your body to burn fat (aerobic) at high intensities without switching to sugar (anerobic). Lots of 400- and 800-meter repeats, along with functional lifting, make up most of the training.

•In the polyphasic sleep section, Dustin Curtis presents several plans for sleeping less through the use of several short naps throughout the day, rather than a single, long session at night. The most extreme plan uses six 20-minute naps which are almost entirely REM sleep if done correctly, but there are several intermediate plans for the less masochistic. I can't wait to try some of these.

•For maximum strength-gain with the smallest amount of effort, Tim recommends 2-to-3 rep sets of relatively heavy weight with lots of rest in between. In a typical, three-times-a-week workout, the muscles are under tension for less than five minutes!

If there's a shortcoming in the book, is that no chapter is quite long enough to really get all the information you want. Tim generally presents a sample plan for achieving the goal, but I find myself wishing that each chapter could be an entire book. However, there are tons of links for learning more at the end of each chapter, and I've found everything I've needed by following these links to go more in-depth.

What vegetarians should know about The 4-Hour Body

Tim Ferriss isn't vegetarian, but he treats it like any other diet worth experimenting with and gauging results. He provides several case studies, one of which is that of vegan ultrarunning god Scott Jurek. (To me, the detailed listing of Scott's one-week grocery list alone makes the book worth the price.)

The main reason Tim isn't vegan, he says, is that he has found no culture that thrived on a purely plant-based diet. But it's not incompatible with any of the hacks in the book, even if access to animal products would certainly make it easier to double or triple testosterone levels for muscle building and sexual enhancement, another one of Tim's experiments in the book.

In "The Meatless Machine II: A 28-Day Experiment," exercise and nutrition coach John Berardi, PhD puts veganism through an unbaised test, not grounded in any morals but simply to judge its suitability as a diet for athletes. His conclusion is that veganism is sustainable even for those whose goal it is to gain muscle, though he warns that supplementation makes it more expensive than a diet that includes animal products. (I actually learned a lot about potential deficiencies that I wasn't previously aware of.) Berardi also makes the encouraging observation that vegans generally take the time to learn much more about their food and where it comes from than omnivores do, so that the increased effort required to eat a plant-based diet may actually be a good thing.

Superhuman in 2011

Last year around this time, I wrote a post called Two Inspiring Books for the New Year. This year, The 4-Hour Body gets that nod.

I'm sure it's not for everyone, especially those who like to play by the rules. As a big fan of fitness and diet experiments, I realize this this book is particularly suited to my tastes more than it will be for others. But if you're looking for something to shake things up, to get you out of a rut created by the same old principles you always hear about, The 4-Hour Body is it.

Natures Cancer Cures

Nature Cancer Cures

Once diagnosed with cancer, most people look at a truncated life with bouts of chemotherapy, hair loss, and all the myriad side effects they will have to endure. However, there are some natural cures that have helped the cancer stricken overcome the disease to a large extent and make their lives a little longer and healthier.

Predominantly, the approach is diet based. The general consensus is that a diet rich in meat, dairy, white rice, sugar and flour along with coffee, soda, liquor, and tobacco all contribute to cancer in the long run. In the University of Victoria in British Colombia, researchers carried out a study where about 200 cancer stricken people participated. They were encouraged to switch to a vegetarian diet. It was seen that about 87% of them underwent “spontaneous remission”.

Cancer occurs when the immune system is compromised by bad diets and wrong types of food. Today, the National Institute of Cancer recommends lots of bananas, oranges, and green leafy vegetables in everyone’s diet, as they contain cancer fighting agents like fiber and vitamins.

Along with a good diet, natural cures also advocate the use of sodium bicarbonate and iodine as two possible ways to cure cancer. There are other natural cures too like colloidal silver and organic sulphate which must be used under medical supervision.

Keeping the body in pH harmony with the right foods, minerals, and other essential nutrients will go a long way in keeping cancer at bay.

Build Immune System To Fight Cancer

Our immune system is the best defense against cancer. Drugs, herbs, or treatment will not work if the immune system is down. Building up the immune system to fight cancer requires a radical change in diet and approach to the overall health of the person.

•Avoid sugar and junk food – White sugar affects the performance of the white blood cells. The general opinion is that 25 spoons of sugar will paralyze about 92% of white blood cells. Now consider this: colas have about 8-10 spoons of sugar, a banana split has 24 spoons, and white bread has 2 spoons per slice. These are just 3 of the many types of food that we eat on a daily basis. Just think how much sugar you are actually eating in a day.

•Avoid high fat food – Breast cancer is common among women who have too much refined fat in their daily diet. This includes saturated and animal fat. A low fat diet will help reduce the chances of breast cancer and increase the survival of those who already have breast cancer.

•Opt for raw food diet – This diet is the best and most difficult to follow. Raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, and sprouted grains will help ensure that your immune system gets the required boost to fight cancer. Avoid cooked food as much as possible. The logic is very simple: a cooked seed will not grow if you plant it, but a raw seed will. This is the basic principle of life. Cooked food kills the nutritive powers of food. When fighting an enemy like cancer, you need all the ammo you can get in raw food.

There is something known as natural functional food which is known for its nutritive powers. A functional food is defined as one which has health properties that go beyond its basic function of supplying nutrients. Some functional foods commonly known to us and easily available are yogurt, tuna, cereals, citrus fruits, and whole grains.

Some of the benefits one can gain from functional foods are:

•Lends support to the immune system to help fight cancer

•Aids stress relief, particularly chronic stress

•Supports detoxification

•Helps improve liver function

•Provides the body with essential vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc.

•Supports the natural acid-alkaline balance in the body

Other Natural cures and Supplements

Bicarbonate plus Molasses Treatment

The observation that cancer is similar to an advanced Candida Albicans fungal stage within a low oxygen cellular and acidic environment has led to the finding of the Bicarbonate plus Molasses Treatment. The humble sodium bicarbonate has been found to be amazingly effective in battling cancerous cells. The basic principle lies in its alkalinity, which is not good for cancer cells. It lets oxygen into the cells, which is something the cancerous cells cannot tolerate as they cannot survive in a high oxygen environment.

There are studies that have indicated that some forms of chemotherapy have been enhanced by tumor pH manipulation using sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate is safe, inexpensive, and proving to be very effective in arresting cancer.

Molasses used along with sodium bicarbonate has helped some people get rid of tumors. By itself, molasses has a very high concentration of trace elements and minerals that offer a broad spectrum alkalizing support that aids sodium bicarbonate as an effective remedy for cancer tumors. It is important to note that baking soda with aluminum added to it must be avoided at all costs.

For long term alkalisation and well-being all the minerals are required, not just sodium bicarbonate as a means of alkalisation. Furthermore the balance of sodium to potassium, calcium to magnesium and so on should be fostered and maintained.

Iodine

Iodine has been found to be effective in ridding the body of unhealthy cells. In correct doses, it helps kill the fungi and micro-organisms that are an inherent part of the cancer process. Breast cancer, ovarian, and prostate cancer are hormonally related cancers, and iodine works very well to balance the hormones and aid recovery.

Tumor suppression was seen in experimental animals that were given iodine as part of treatment. It has also been seen that selenium is required for iodine to work effectively. Selenium aids the immune system.

While these are natural cures for cancer which have been tried and tested, they are best used under consultation with your healthcare provider or oncologist.

I have coached a number of people this year and am conscious that at this time of the year we are busy...and I mean very busy.

Interestingly it will soon be time to review the year that has been.To stop and literally take stock of where you have been and what worked, what didn't work and where to next..Allot f people seem to miss this part of the completion process for the year and end up charging off into the new year without stopping..I believe it is important to set aside some time to do this work of reflection, review and completion.

Here are some suggestions that may be of some use to you..

Take the 21 of December off with no commitments at all,  its the Winter Soltice, yes the whole day is for you...

Ensure you get some time off after Christmas Day and Boxing days, take a day a two where there is nothing planned and allow yourself to relax and recharge yourself before the new year.

Menopause Naturally

I recently found this book by Gabrielle Kushi a Macrobiotic teacher..check it out!!

Heart disease is the number one cause of death among postmenopausal women in the US. This probably has little correlation to menopause and is more a result of the aging process. However, there are a number of things that women can do to decrease the likelihood of developing heart disease. The most important ones are regular physical activity, a heart-healthy diet, and not smoking.

To choose a diet that promotes heart health, one should emphasize plant-based foods. Whole grains, fresh vegetables, fruits, beans, and legumes should be the mainstays of the diet.

Animal foods, especially those high in saturated fats and cholesterol, should be minimized or avoided. One should also avoid foods with trans fatty acids. Almost all trans fatty acids are created in commercial food processing through hydrogenation. Hydrogenation transforms vegetable oils into fats that are more stable and thus prolong the shelf life of foods. However, trans fatty acids are known to dramatically increase the risk of heart disease. It is easy to avoid trans fatty acids by reading food labels. Any product that contains hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils or fats will also contain trans fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have a positive effect on preventing cardiovascular disease and maintaining cardiovascular health. These fats are not only important for heart health, but for every cell in the body. People deficient in omega-3 fatty acids may experience fatigue, dry skin, cracked nails, thin and breakable hair, constipation, immune system malfunction, aching joints, depression, arthritis, and hormonal imbalances. Many of these symptoms are often associated with midlife and menopause.

These fatty acids are found in flaxseed and fatty fish such as salmon, albacore, herring, and mackerel. Cod liver oil, egg yolk, and algae are other possible sources. Flaxseed oil, with its composition of 57-percent omega-3 fatty acids, served cold with a dressing over salads, is a palatable choice. Another choice is 1/4 cup of ground flaxseed three to seven days a week. Grind your daily serving in a coffee grinder. Stir the flax meal into soups, beverages, cereals, or salads. The flax meal must be prepared fresh daily, due to its high rate of oxidation.

Cancer Diagnosis? Must Read Resource Books

I am passionate about health and wellness and have reached my fifties.I am saddened by the number of woman amongst my group of friends who have been diagnosed with cancer, breast, lung, brain and pancratic. This even includes my younger sister Clare-Ellen who wa diagnosed some months ago with breast cancer.Of course, how we tackle the challenge of ill health is unique to each of us we do it in  our own way and within our belief systems.

While I was training at the Kushi Institute in Beckett, Mass,USA as a Macrobiotic Counsellor a number of my "buddies" had been diagnosed with cancer of various types and grades and they had NOT chosen the chemotherapy route, but had chosen Macrobiotics and a complete change to  their lifestyle. Macrobiotics is really a philosophy. 'Macro" means large and "Bio" means life. The foods include are whole grains, mainly organic short grain rice, a variety of vegetable, beans and bean products, sea vegetables, soups, pickles and non-aromatic teas.

I have to say this approach is not for everyone, however I have seen two people with Stage 4 Lymphoma cancer who made the changes soon enough and some years later are now working with oncologists to support others to make the necessary changes requred and to shift towards reclaiming their health.

I have attached several resource books that  I recommend to clients. verne Varona is a senior Macrobiotic Teacher, Author etc who offers one to one work with those diagnosed with cancer.see his website at http://www.vernevarona.com/

Also, Suzanne Sommers Book, "Knockout". In this book Suzanne covers a wide range of Doctors and alternative approaches who are curing cancer currently..This book is a must read..

As many of you will know Michio Kushi and his wife Aveline brought Macrobitoics to the west and estabished the movement in the Unites States."The Cancer Prevention Diet" is an excellent resource with dietary suggestions, weekly menus and recipes..

I hope this information will offer some assistance to those who are looking for guidance and are open to either trying other oprions than tradtional medicine, or using food to work to either with traditional medicine.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Hi and Welcome to my Gratitude Post...

I normally share about good, healthy food and wellness, however I have been thinking in the last few days about gratitude. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving in New Zealand where Iive. My mind has been on giving thanks this week for reasons that I will share. In the last week we in New Zealand have had headline news concerning a mining incident in which 29 men died in the South Island of New Zealand, on a rugged and remote coast. As a nation we have all been glued to the TV with updates, news, videos all with the expectation and hope that these men would be rescued or at the least some of these men would be saved. However, sadly yesterday the mine had a second explosion as a search party were about to enter and  of course it was just too late and the blast was  too severe to assume anyone could have survived. It was announced last night to the families that everyone in the mine had perished.

I share this with you for two reasons. Firstly, I have decided to adopt the American traditional into my life and next year will be a "Thanksgiving" meal at my home.

I also had an overwhelming feeling of gratitude, for the strength of the men leading the rescue, for their strength of character and humanity..It has been no small task to be in the press and offering hope to families at thier time of crisis, especially as the days went by. Its too many wonderful Husband's, Partner's, Father's, Sons, Lovers and Best Friends to lose in one hit..May God Bless them and their families..

I am thankful for where my own life has brought me,  2010 has been my most challenging in my entire life. I have experienced extreme personal loss and heartache, however what I learnt is that it doesn't kill you, its perhaps not what you had envisaged life would bring to you. I never thought I would say that..I mean ever.

I am so appreciative of my wonderful family, my parents who are 87 and 80 years of age and still going strong. My siblings and their gorgeous children/families who are such shining examples of hope and innocence.

For everything actually..I count myself very lucky.

May you too enjoy your day and may the blessings of the season be bestowed on you!

I thought a small daily practice could be helpful to include in this post.
Daily at the end of each day I review the day and then I write in my journal a five point entry.I list 5 things for which I am grateful. Some days it is hard to limit the list to only five items. However we all know what we focus on expands so daily it is..

This daily practice is part of the "Radiant You" program that I offer online please check it out when you get time as I offer healthy, plant-based food, recipes, lifestyle tips etc...AND my big news is the information in the "Radiant YOU" program is about to be published in New York in the spring next year so for a limited time I am offering the manuscript for ONLY $US20.00 and a FREE weekly ezine..so please come and join our community..

Japanese Pumpkin Pie (kabocha squash) Yum!

Try this pie for the holidays!

Don’t be afraid of using fabulous kabocha squash instead of traditional pumpkin – it adds a sweetness and flavor that surpasses any other squash for pie, and allows for a low sugar dessert recipe. Ingredient notes: agar agar is a seaweed that is available in most health food stores. It has no taste whatsoever, it’s simple to use, and it allows the pie filling to set in the refrigerator instead of the oven. Yacon syrup is a beneficial low glycemic sweetener extracted from the yacon root.

Japanese Pumpkin Pie (kabocha squash)

INGREDIENTS:

For the pie:

2 cups pureed cooked kabocha squash (Japanese Pumpkin)*

1¼ cups water

1½ Tbsp agar agar powder

1 cup cashews

1/3 cup yacon syrup

1 Tbsp cinnamon powder

2 tsp ginger powder

½ tsp nutmeg powder

¼ tsp clove powder

1 tsp vanilla extract

For the crust:

1 cup almond flour (you can make this by grinding almonds in a food processor)

1 cup buckwheat flour

1/4 tsp sea salt

3 Tbsp coconut oil

1/2 Tbsp vanilla extract

1 Tbsp palm sugar

DIRECTIONS:

Make the crust first. Preheat the oven to 325 F. In a food processor, combine all the crust ingredients until a crumbly dough has formed. Dough should stick together when pressed – if not, add a touch more water. Press into a pie pan evenly, and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until edges just begin to brown. Remove from oven and let cool.

To make the filling, bring the water to a simmer in a small saucepan. Add the agar agar powder, and cook over low heat for about 2 minutes, or until powder is completely dissolved. Let cool for a moment, and pour into a blender.

Add the cashews into the agar mixture, and blend until a smooth milk has formed. Add the remaining ingredients and blend again to form a silky puree. Pour the warm mixture into the prepared pie crust, and place in the refrigerator for 2 hours, or until pie has set. Serve as desired.

*To make kabocha puree: Preheat the oven to 375 F. Slice a small squash in half and remove all the seeds and stringy material. Fill a baking tray with water about half an inch high. Place the the two halves face down in the water, place the tray in the oven, and bake for about 45-50 minutes or until squash is tender. Turn the squash upside down and let cool before handling.

Use a spoon to scrape out the orange flesh from the soft green rind. Place in a blender or food processor to whip into a puree. (The quantity for the above recipe is measured after the squash has been processed.)

Powerful Woman Powwow!!

I just heard about this amazing program for women and I immediately thought of you. There’s this super spiritual, super smart holistic nutritionist who’s holding a Powerful Woman Powwow. Her name is Rose Cole, she’s totally in tune with the Universe and I love her.

So, “What is the Powerful Woman Powwow,” you ask? Well, let me tell you. Rose is conducting a three-month coaching program that – get this – includes a 3-day holistic living luxury retreat in Santa Monica, CA where you get to work with Rose one-on-one! Plus, it’s exclusive … she’s only inviting truly spiritually conscious women who are ready to take their lives to the next level and who want to create positive change for the planet.

Amazing, right? It gets better.

During the retreat, all of your meals are designed by Rose and completely organic. You get things like a 10-day detox kit, blood work, hormone testing, and stress level tests…. You get to do shamanic breathwork sessions, a Human Design Reading (a roadmap to what your purpose, learnings, and highest potential is this lifetime), and a photo shoot with Christina Morassi (another amazingly conscious woman) who is a shamanic photographer – very cool. I’ve never heard of any program like it.

The point of the holistic intensive is to get your body in alignment with your spiritual purpose so you can start to connect to the Universe in a bigger way and manifest huge change for yourself, and the planet. The last time Rose held her Powerful Woman Powwow she had all these incredible women fly in from around the world to work with her and they’re raving about their experience. They’re saying stuff like “I’m in the best physical and spiritual state ever in my life!” And these are women who came into the program as spiritual warriors. Imagine how incredible the whole 3 month program must be!

Tofu-Soya Bean Curd - 5 Ways to Prepare it,including recipes etc

Tofu

Tofu or bean curd is made from soya beans and has been used in Oriental cuisine for two thousand years. It is the smooth white curd you see in soups, stirfys and casseroles and is now readily available in supermarkets and health food stores.

It is known to have a number of health benefits including:

• Contains isoflavones (natural estrogens) which have many health benefits.

• low in saturated fats.

• Versatile to use, it takes of the flavour of surrounding foods, either sweet or savory.

• High in nutrition.

• High in dietary fiber.

• High in protein.

• Prevents and fights:

• 1) Cancer

• 2) Heart disease

• 3) Osteoporosis

• 4) Menopausal systems

• 5) High Cholesterol

"Scientific research has discovered that adding two ounces of soy to your daily diet can help fight breast and prostate cancer, battle coronary artery disease, ease menopause symptoms, lower your cholesterol, and give a boost to your immune system"- Dr. Earl Mindell (Soy Miracle, Fireside, New York, 1995)

Ever wondered how Tofu is made, here is the process;

Tofu Recipe:

13½ oz (370g) soyabeans, washed and soaked

1½ to 1¾ teaspoons of Nigari (magnesium chloride)

OR

Calcium sulphate (0.5to 1% volume of soyamilk)

Method:
The beans are soaked in water, then ground into a pulp, then heated until cooked and strained through gauge to produce soya milk that you will be familiar with in the stores. A coagulant, nigari or calcium sulphate is added. This makes the milk curdle and curds form which becomes the Tofu.

When buying Tofu ensure it is fresh and it must be creamy and white and has little or no odour.

How to store:

Refrigerate:

It is best to store bought tofu in the fridge in a glass container, preferably with enough room in the container to cover the tofu in the dish with fresh water. Remove it from the packet and add fresh water to cover. It will keep this way for a week.

Tip: Tofu will take on flavors from other foods etc so ensure the container is airtight.

Freezer:

It is possible to freeze Tofu and it will keep indefinitely this way.

The freezing process will change the texture of the Tofu by making it chewy and meat like. The Japanese call this ‘koyadofu’.

Tip: To use Tofu from frozen it needs to completely thawed, then squeeze out any excess liquid and use the tofu by crumbling or in cut into cubes.

It is best used after freezing in the following ways;

• Soups

• Stews

• Casseroles

Handle tofu with care:

Tip: Tofu is fragile when it is time to use the tofu, try inverting the storage container with the water in it and tip it into a large bowl. The tofu will float. It can then be scooped out by hand.

Tofu comes in various styles depending on what you want to do with it;

For example;

• Firm

• soft

To Cook;

There is a range of ways in which to cook tofu:

1) Steaming: This is a slimming way to prepare Tofu as there are no added oils or fats. The cooking process does not impair any of the vitamins or minerals.

Steamed Tofu Spring Rolls

1 block firm tofu

1 medium onion – chopped

1 clove garlic – mince then chop

Herbs

1 tsp grated ginger

1 medium carrot cut in ¼ (fine cut) and (lightly cooked)

4 large cabbage leaves (blanched), cut out the hard core and overlap the cabbage leaves on the sushi mat.

1 tsp salt

Method;

Blend tofu smooth (Add 1 tablespoon of *Kuzu or Arrowroot)

Mix in onion, garlic, ginger and salt.

Lay cabbage leaves on a *sushi mat.

Cover with ½ the tofu mix (lay the carrot across the middle running horizontally.

Alternatively the carrots can be added to the tofu mixture.

Roll like sushi.

Steam for 15 minutes.

Serve warm or cold. These rolls set slightly when they are cool and become easier to cut and serve.

*Kuzu is a thickening agent and can be bought in health food stores. Substitute arrowroot if necessary.

*Sushi mats can be purchases very inexpensively in supermarkets or Asian food stores.

2) Blanching: (par boiling) It warms and freshens the tofu.

Tofu Sour Cream

1lb soft tofu, sliced (blanch in hot water for 10 minutes), then rinse and allow to cool.

Mix in the following to taste;

2 - 4 tablespoons olive oil or light sesame oil.

½ cup water

½ tsp salt

Juice of 1/3 lemon

2 – 3 cloves garlic (mince or pressed)

*Note; the Tofu must be cooked, i.e. heated through.

3) Fried:

Marinated Tofu Cutlets

1 to 1 ½ lbs Tofu

½ cup Tamari

¼ cup of Rice Vinegar

1 ¼ cups water (filtered)

1 cup and 1 Tablespoon arrowroot powder

2 -3 tablespoons rice flour

Water, *Mirin (optional)

Sesame oil

Method;

• Cut tofu in ½ inch slices.

• Marinade tofu in shoyu, rice vinegar and water for 30 minutes or longer.

• Mix the arrowroot powder, sea salt, rice flour and water to make a paste, like a dippable tempura batter.

• Add a few dashes of mirin if desired.

• Lightly brush the skillet with sesame oil.

• Dip the tofu slices in batter and then pan fry until the tofu is lightly browned.

• Serve warm with a dipping sauce.

*Mirin is a rice wine sauce and can be purchased in health food stores and supermarkets.

4) Pureeing or blending:

Classic Baked Tofu Cheesecake (yum)

Makes 1 Cheesecake

For the granola crust:

½ cup orangic corn oil

¼ cup barley malt

¼ cup maple syrup

¼ cup organic apple juice

½ cup walnuts, chopped

4 cups rolled oats

½ tablespoon cinnamon, ground

½ cup almond slices

For the cheesecake filling:

2 Ibs / 900g soft silken tofu

1 ½ cups maple syrup

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons sesame butter

1 pinch sea salt

¼ cup lemon juice

1 teaspoon lemon rind, grated

3 tablespoons arrowroot

2 tablespoons agar flakes

¼ cup organic apple juice

To make the granola crust:

1) Preheat the oven to 325F.

2) In a mixing bowl, combine the ingredients and transfer to a baking pan.

3) Bake for 15 minutes, mixing occasionally.

4) Remove form the oven, break the granola up into pieces and allow to cool.

5) Combine 2 cups of the granola with 2 tablespoons each of corn oil, apple juice, and maple syrup.

6) Press the granola mixture into the base of an 9 inch springform pan. Set aside.

To make the cheesecake filling:

Increase the oven temperature to 350F.

Crumble tofu into a blender and add all the remaining ingredients. Blend well, stopping a few times to mix the contents with a spatula to achieve an even, creamy consistence.

Pour filling into the crust and bake for 40 to 50 minutes.

Allow to cool and serve with your favourite topping.

From the Vegan Dessert Cookbook, “Love Eric”, Eric Lechasseur

5) Scrambling

Tofu can be scrambled like eggs, crumble tofu and add with quickly sautéed vegetables such as finely sliced onions or leeks, fresh sweet corn, matchstick carrots. Season with a few drops of shoyu (soya sauce)

*During the process of making tofu, once the beans have been boiled they are strained and the beans which have been ground provide two additional by products of this process which are also very nutritious.

Sea Vegetables-The superfood of the sea!!

Sea Vegetables -The Super food of the Sea.

Sea vegetables are a range of marine algae that are available to purchase in health food stores and Asian food stores that can be added to our diet on a daily basis. They are rich in nutrients and minerals and trace elements and are known as the super food of the sea.

Sea vegetables contain more than 10 times the amount of minerals over land vegetables. They contain; calcium, iron, phosphorous, sodium, zinc, folate (which has been shown to reduce colon cancer) and iodine which is available in the human body to be absorbed easily. Also included are vitamins A, C and the B group. Studies have documented that seaweed has components that assist in reducing inflammation, and lowering blood pressure and fight tumour growth.

Sea vegetables are also antinuke. This means, that they bind with radioactive substances in the body and assist the body in releasing them.

Most of the population in the western world consumes sea vegetables daily without realizing it. They are present in ice cream, puddings, bottled sauces, cheeses and even toothpaste. They are used to thicken products and act as stabilizers. They offer strong alkalinity required to maintain good health. They assist with helping water metabolism and cleansing lymph fluid.

Eaten regularly in Asian diets, they add a much need source of additional nutrition lacking in many diets in the West. They are easy to prepare and tasty, although some are stronger in flavor with fishy flavors.

When and How to use sea vegetables:

Regular Use: (daily or often)

• Agar-agar; Vegetarian Alternative to gelatine. These little flakes are added to liquid to make gels, like puddings and aspics.

• Dulse; A reddish purple sea vegetables, can be used in soups, side dishes and salads.

• Kelp Powder: Often used as a condiment and sprinkled on foods.

• Korengo: A New Zealand native sea algae. Add to soups, side dishes and casseroles style meals.

• Spiralina: An algae powder used as a whole food supplement.

• Toasted Nori Sheets; can be eaten in sheets used in a roll as sushi or cooked into a condiment. Nori sheets should be toasted over an open flame for a few minutes (they turn from dark to green).

• Wakame; A long thin sea vegetable. Can be used in soups, pressed into pressed salads, baked or ground into a condiment.

• Kombu; Japanese Kelp. It comes in thick wide straps. It is then soaked and used in bean dishes to make them more digestible and to add minerals. It can be added to grains, instead of salt and in broth for noodles and nabe dishes.

• Wakame and Kombu are used regularly in soups, bean and vegetable dishes.

They may be eaten by themselves, sprinkled over grains, or used to make nori condiment or vegetable sushi.

Occasional Use (small two-thirds cup servings, including the vegetables, two or three times per week).
• Arame; Thin, dark strands, it is usually sautéed with vegetables. (no soaking required)
• Hiziki; the strongest sea vegetable, it comes in long or short wiry “strings” and has the most fishy flavour. It is best sautéed with other vegetables. It needs to be soaked before cooking it.
• Note; Hiziki has a stronger flavour than Arame. For Westerners who are not accustomed to sea vegetables, it might be easier to start with Arame, cooked with sweet vegetables. The taste for sea vegetables develops over time and more complex recipes or combination may be incorporated.

Suggestions for Sea Vegetable Recipes;

• Arame or Hiziki with onions.

• Arame of Hiziki with sweet corn.

• Arame or Hiziki with tempeh and Lotus Root.

• Arame or Hiziki with dried diakon and onions.

Sample Sea Vegetable Recipes;
Arame with Onions
1. Wash and drain on ounce of dried Arame, medium handful. Brush the frying pan with 1 TSP light or dark sesame oil and heat it. Add the onions and sauté for two to three minutes (water sauté if oil is to be avoided). Carrot, dried diakon, rutabaga, sweet corn or other vegetables may also be added.

2. Place the arame on top of the onions and add enough water to cover the onions.

3. Bring to the boil, turn the heat down to low, and add a small amount of shoyu /soy sauce.

4. Cover and simmer for about 20-25 minutes. Add shoyu to taste (not overly salty).

5. Simmer for another five to ten minutes, mix and stir until the liquid has evaporated.

Note; Hiziki should be cooked longer, up to one and one-quarter to one and one-half hours total cooking time in order to lose its bitterness and become sweet.
Hiziki with Vegetables;
Serves 4

Hiziki has a slightly fishy taste, and may take a little getting used to.
Medium handful of dried hiziki, soaked in spring water for 30 minutes

2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil

1 onion, sliced into half moons

Pinch sea salt

Spring water

1 tablespoon shoyu

1 tablespoon mirin (rice wine sauce)

1 medium carrot. Sliced into match sticks

Scallions (spring onions), sliced for garnish.

Method;

Soak the hiziki in spring water, chop the vegetables. When the hiziki is softened, discard the soaking water and chop into 1 inch pieces. Heat the sesame oil over a medium heat in a pan with a lid. Add the onion and sauté for a few minutes, adding the salt. Add the hiziki and sauté with the onion, coating it lightly in oil. Add water halfway up the hiziki and onion. Bring to the boil and add shoyu and mirin. Cover and let simmer 30 minutes. Add carrot matchsticks on top. Let simmer 10 more minutes.

Garnish with spring onions.

Variations; if using arame, rinse the arame (no soaking required) and reduce cooking time by 10 minutes. Also can add, corn, green beans or snow peas.

Baked Wakame with Onion and Squash
Serves 4 – 6
2 cups onions, sliced in thin half moons

1 cup wakame, soaked and sliced into 2 inch pieces (reserve soaking water for this recipe)

2 tablespoons sesame tahini

1 teaspoon shoyu

½ small buttercup or butternut squash, thinly sliced (unpeeled if organic)

Preheat oven to 350F.Place onion is a saucepan with a small amount of wakame soaking water. Bring to the boil, cover, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove and place in a small casserole dish. Mix wakame with onion. Dilute tahini with about half the wakame soaking water and shoyu. Mix the wakame with onion. Smooth mixture evenly over the top unitl evenly in the casserole dish, and layer slice squash over the top till covered. Cover and bake in oven for 30 minutes. Remove cover and bake another 10 – 15 minutes to remove any excess liquid and slightly brown the top.

What Makes Max International Different from Other MLM’s?
After 37 years of being a health fanatic and an athlete, and 22 years of marketing health and wellness products, I’ve taken just about every supplement know to man. I’ve seen a lot of products and companies come and go, which has given me a pretty keen radar when it comes to MLM companies that market health and wellness products.

Fast Track Your Weight Loss in 2010

January 8th, 2010 ShareThisFAST TRACK YOUR WEIGHT LOSS IN 2010
By JJ Virgin
It’s already the middle of January and you might be wondering, “Did I shape up yet? Did I lose the weight?” Wake up call: You’ve been going to the gym and working on your eating habits since Jan. 2, which is only a week or two. It still begs the question: How can I fast track my weight loss?
Most of my clients are busy people who want to see results yesterday. Here are a few of my favorite ways to get to your health, fitness or weight loss goal even quicker.
*Get rid of the bad whites. Good whites include that new white T-shirt. Bad whites include white flour and sugar. Try to rid them from your diet, which means goodbye cookies, doughnuts, cakes, muffins, white bread and anything else with sugar in it.
*Don’t get tricked. That also means you should ditch the high frutose corn syrup products. Make sure you become a label reader in 2010. High frutose corn syrup is sugar and treat it accordingly.
*Add fat back into your diet. For all of you who have been fat free, it’s time to realize that your body and brain need fat to function. But what fat? I love to use coconut milk as a great healthy fat or extra virgin olive oil.
*Get out there and burst. It only takes 20-30 minutes a day to do my cardio bursting training. This includes a three minute warm up and then moderate cardio for 2 minutes followed by a 1 minute burst where you go hard (think of how you felt as a kid with lungs burning racing somewhere). Then another two minutes moderate and burst again. Finish with a three minute cool down. Do this every other day and add weight training to your non-bursting days.
*Make sure you actually go grocery shopping with a list. There’s nothing worse than standing there in the grocery store and just tossing things in the cart. Plan out your healthy meals for the week and then shop accordingly. You will also save dollars this way.
*Kill your sweet tooth. When you stop eating sugar, you will retrain your taste buds and free yourself FOREVER from sugar addictions. Replace processed sugary carbs with fruits that are tart and tangy. Believe it or not, I promise you will stop craving the sugar. Soon, sugary treats enjoyed every once in awhile will seem much too sweet. (By the way, xylitol is my sweetener of choice).
*Stop snacking. You just need to eat three solid meals a day. Continual snacking turns your body into a sugar burning machine and not a fat burning machine.
*Don’t forget to sleep. You need 7 to 9 hours of unbroken, solid sleep each night to repair your body. Make a conscious decision to wind down earlier, go to bed in a cool, dark room and get your quality ‘zzzzzz’s.
*Don’t fret the small stuff. Remember, it’s all small stuff. Vow to rid as much stress from your life as possible. It’s good for your health and will help you reach your fitness goals faster.

One Simple Tip to Control Cravings..

Cravings will control you... if you let them.

They will drive you crazy and destroy your
chances of losing weight.

Cravings will sneak up on you when you are
at your weakest moments, and seduce you with
their powers.

… But if you follow this one simple tip to
control your cravings... your body actually
STOPS having these cravings... and you are
free of cravings forever.

Let's start here...

===============
Cravings Will Come And Go
===============

When you are having a mad craving for
something that's fattening or sugary (like french
fries or chocolate) you may think the only way to
eliminate that craving is to eat it...

But here's something that took me years to
figure out...

Cravings are your mind's confusion.

You may think that your body wants that fat
load or that sugar rush, but your body is sending
you that craving because it is starving for
nutrition.

It may be desperate for a certain mineral or
vitamin because it needs that for ONE of your body's
biological processes (there are millions, by the way).

Your body is always going through many
different chemical reactions at once, and it needs
vitamins and minerals to complete those tasks.

But if the mineral or vitamin is not there,
then your body sends out the signal "Need
Food. Eat Now".

Your body knows that if it can just get you
eating, then it might get that vitamin or
mineral that it is lacking.

=====================
French Fries Are Not A Vitamin
=====================

Your mind interprets this "Eat Now"
signal as a craving for something with high fat
and sugar because from past experiences your
mind remembers that these foods gave you the most
pleasure and the biggest "hit" of euphoria.

Your mind takes this opportunity to go after
what it wants the most - pleasure.

And that's not a good or a bad thing... it's
just the way our brain is wired.

But unfortunately, pleasure will not help your
body's shortage of nutrition.

That's why you often still have cravings even
after you eat junk food or really sugary, fattening
foods.

Haven't you ever wondered why you can never seem
to "satisfy" your cravings?

==============
"Feed Me Semore!"
==============

It's like that musical "Little Shop Of Horrors"
with the venus fly trap plant that could never get
enough blood and eventually started eating
people alive just to get it's fix.

It's the same with your cravings.

Your body is screaming out "Feed Me Some More!"
over and over again

You can eat, and eat, and you may
feel relieved temporarily but the cravings always
come back.

And that's because you're not going to the
source of the problem - Your Body is Lacking
Nutrition.

So the next time you have an intense craving
why not try something different?

===================
Make a deal with yourself.
===================

Tell yourself that you can eat whatever you are
craving only AFTER you eat a nutritious "mini-meal"
first.

And then after you eat it, take a moment and
tune into yourself.

You may find that the intense craving you had before is
gone... or at least it has been reduced to
a craving that you can control.

And the more often you do this, the easier it will be
to control the cravings you get, and then you will start
to get less and less cravings...

Why does this happen?

Your body will be getting what it NEEDS (nutrition!)
and the craving signals will become weaker and weaker
until they finally disappear forever.

This is how it starts. The healthy process of
losing weight is a journey that starts with a simple
step.

This is how it happens, if you allow it.

======================
One Simple Tip To Control Cravings
=====================

--> Eat A Nutritious 'mini-Meal' Before You
Eat What You're Craving

Put this up on your computer at work or on a
post-it on your mirror in your bathroom.

Just try experimenting with this tip this week
and see how it works for you.

Enjoy the process as it's unfolding. The body
knows what it needs, and when you give it what's
it's truly craving, you live in freedom.

How to Make Your intentions Work for You!

Everything about you is always intentional!
How do you know what your intention was? Take a look at your results, what you're attracting. Either you set a conscious intention, or you settled for your default intention - you know the one, it's what you just naturally attract. Sometimes it's what you want, sometimes not.
You have the ability to create your life as you want it - and you get feedback from the Universe pretty fast. Why not use this to create your year?
I've just taken a couple of days to get intentional about my 2010. You can do this too.
Imagine it's December 31, 2010 and you're looking back on what changed for you. What inspired you, what made you so excited about your life it felt magical? What are you grateful for?
Take some quiet time to write about how your year was. This exercise is like the Order Book process - not only does it help you visualize what you'd like to have happen, but it also sets powerful energy in motion to start attracting those things to you. The more you include details and emotions in this the more powerful it will be.
Feng Shui Strategies for Success in 2010
Once you've written your gratitude list, choose one dream to focus on for now. The best is one that is both a wee bit scary and is also exciting.
When you consider this aspect of your life, which Gua could do with a boost of energy? It's not always the Wealth & Prosperity area - they're all connected. Perhaps it's the Knowledge & Self-cultivation area to support you in learning the lessons you need to learn to make a shift in who you're being. While a little goes a long way in Feng Shui, you can always add an enhancement to more than one Gua for extra support.
Next, look at the list below and choose an enhancement to support your intention.
You'll notice the areas of the Bagua paired below are diagonally opposite each other – this means they are intimately linked, one supports the other. You can map the Bagua on your home and on each room. To find where these areas are in your space and how to map it, check out Bagua Map.
And here is a Bagua Map you can print and carry around your home as you see where the different areas are.
1. Connect with your purpose and your passionThe Career area (water) represents life purpose. And the Fame & Reputation area (fire) is about passion, visibility and integrity. Integrity is about living a 'whole' life, expressing your authentic self – the one with dreams and passions and things you are here to do in this lifetime.
Great enhancements to support you in these areas are:Career – a water fountain, picture of water, anything black Fame & Reputation – candles, anything red, stars
2. Connect with your spiritYour outer life is a reflection of your inner life. This area is about balancing outer success with inner peace and being able to enjoy your accomplishments. The Knowledge & Self Cultivation area of the Bagua is where you learn the lessons you need to learn to connect with your Spirit. And this is connected with the Love & Relationship area where you are given the gift of other people in your life to learn from – particularly difficult people! What are the lessons you need to learn?
Knowledge & Self Cultivation – a great place to meditate, have a picture of mountains, symbols of wisdom & knowledge.Love & Relationships – pairs of things, letters of appreciation, symbols of teamwork
3. Address any negative beliefs and take inspired actionsYour doubts and voices telling you that you can’t do something are what stand in the way of achieving your dreams. It’s important to address these, and to have your ‘family of choice’ around you to cheer you on. The Health & Family area supports you in addressing unfinished family issues and creating a healthy and fulfilled life, living your potential.
The Children & Creativity area supports you to take inspired actions. Sometimes you don’t go for your dreams because you don’t know how to do it. You don't have to know how – trust it will unfold as you ask your higher self, the Universe, and others for the next step. Take bite size pieces keeping your outcome firmly in view.
Health & Family – healthy plants, family pictures, symbols of good healthChildren & Creativity – items associated with happy childhood memories, symbols of creativity such as children’s paintings, creative projects
4. Enlist the support of your environment and helpful peopleLive with what you love, and surround yourself with symbols of where you are going, not where you’ve been.
The Wealth & Prosperity area represents abundance of all good things. Prosperity, good feelings, fulfillment, love, success. And every other area of the Bagua affects it. You reflect the energy of your environment so you want that energy to be the highest it can be. No clutter bogging you down, no reminders of things you don’t want in your life. No-one ever created anything without the help of others. The Helpful People area represents anything which supports you to achieve your dreams – workshops, mentors, books etc.
Wealth & Prosperity: Anything that gives you a feeling of abundance, anything you would like more of.Helpful People & Travel: a globe to symbolize travel or global expansion in your business, pictures of anyone who is helpful to you.
5. Be in alignment with your authentic self The Center is where it all comes together – your dreams, passions, beliefs, environment, actions and your outcomes. This is when attraction happens effortlessly.
Enhancements for the CenterPottery and earth tones, meditation area, symbols of harmony and balance.
You don't need to do something in every area. Start with an area that represents your big intention for 2010 and place an enhancement there - with intention. Then stay open to attracting what you need.
Once you've placed your enhancement: what is one action you can take today to move you towards your intention? Even taking a very small step will set powerful energy in motion, supported by the enhancement you places.
If you would like support to discover what's next and make it happen in the next 12 months, I'll be sharing the tools I've used to create powerful shifts, in the Bring on Your Magical 2010 program. We begin next week!
Wishing you all the dreams you can dream of in 2010. May you live fully and passionately.
